The Millenium
Square has been chosen as a well-loved symbol of modern Bristol
in a lot of aspects of design. This is a public space which is
used by all sectors of the community, where people are encouraged
to use the water features in the Summer. Town planning, Architecture
and Public Art as well as Bristol The City are all well represented
by this space. |
 |
Lots
of photographs were taken of the square and the water sculptures |
| |
Colour
swatches were developed from the colours in the photos with reference
to the Business Match logo colours |

WATER SCULPTURES ( BACKGROUND LAYER
), PHOTOGRAPHY
|
| It is suggested
that one of the water sculpture images could be used for the page
background. This is representative of the sculptures themselves
and also photography. The connection of Bristol as a City with
the water throughout its history is well documented, so a reference
to the water also takes this into account.
The colours and feelings suggested by the photographs are all
optimistic images. Blue skies, sunlight glinting on the water,
even the cooler greens and greys have a lot of light and movement.
The shapes created by the water itself add another dimension to
the artwork by creating another series of flowing abstract shapes
within the layers, this takes the cover into a conceptual space
reflecting current fine art movements. |

This
photo was the one chosen to form the background for the image |

The
next four concept boards were used as the section headers for
the Directory and the colours and themes carried throughout each
section |

| BRISTOL has a long history of association
with the film industry. The BBC and Watershed were pioneers
with the Wildscreen projects and Watershed has continued to
support media throughout the years. Prizewinning AArdman Animations
have been creating new ways of presenting animation. The film
icon was scanned from real footage then traced to provide
a vectored graphic. This to represent the film and moving
image industry and the role Bristol has taken as pioneers
in these areas. Where the film strip meets the circuit board
is symbolic of the effect of digital technology on the moving
image. |

| RADIO & WIRELESS
COMMUNICATION |
| The illustrations have been gathered
to illustrate that the “lighting” icon and the
concentric circles have been used in technical drawings and
logos to represent wireless communication. This icon fulfils
a double purpose in the design. Firstly standing as an icon
for the creative industries Radio, Broadcasting, Music &
Entertainment (including comedy). Also this is using the Business
Match Logo as the lighting flash, bringing the logo into the
page design. The fact the circles are centred on the logo
is an icon for the communication and networking being encouraged
by the Business Match Project. |

| MUSIC & SOUND
|
| The graphic created by Goldwave from
a piece of stereo music has been taken to make a graphic to
represent the music and audio side of creative industries. |
|
|
| DIGITAL
TECHNOLOGY |
| A real circuit board has
been scanned and digitally manipulated to make an icon to
represent the effect of digital technology on all creative
industries ( photography, film, tv, special effects, animation,
print and graphics ). This also represents the totally new
creative forms such as digital projections, digital and vectored
artwork, websites and all interactive media. |

This poem by
visionary artist Fleur Barnfather was chosen to represent
the creative industries which involve writing. A section
of the poem was digitally manipulated to reflect the water
theme of the cover. |
